The team at SMS GY have been ‘Braving The Heat’ as their 11 week challenge to go from ‘Couch to 5K’ and will conclude on the 11th August when they take their places at the Gorleston Park Run.
We are so grateful for all the teams amazing support and please read more about their fantastic fundraising challenge and show them your support by donating to the East Coast Hospice appeal.
Having reached Week 6 of 9, the SMS running team are now almost two thirds of the way through the Couch to 5K programme. Despite family and work commitments preventing some of the team joining the after-work training sessions as often as they would like, a hard core 7-8 of us continue to assemble after-work every Tuesday and Thursday to pound the pathways around Beacon Park.
It’s notable that this remains very much a mixed ability team, and the sheer determination of the less able runners to persist with and complete the programme is hugely admirable. The hot weather continues unabated, but we have modified our route to include some pleasant, shady and well-maintained footpaths running through the woods adjacent to SMS which provide some welcome respite.
As we have progressed through Couch to 5K the runs have gradually increased in duration and are now mostly at the 8-10 minute mark, a significant step up from the 1 minute runs we performed in the first week of the programme. Despite this, we have collectively risen to the challenge every step of the way, and all of us have seen very clear improvements in our stamina. This weekend, for our ‘homework’, we will be moving into uncharted territory by attempting an uninterrupted 25 minute run. Good luck everyone!
The 5K Gorleston parkrun in which we will be participating is now little over 3 weeks away, and once we are joined by SMS’ most experienced runners and those who have been following the Couch to 5K programme at home, we hope to bring along a good sized team for this event.
Please continue to support us, and our chosen charity East Coast Hospice, by donating online at and helping us raise funds for this most deserving cause.
We’d also like to congratulate Andy Pedder at completing his Couch to 5K programme last weekend. Andy is unable to attend the Gorleston parkrun with the rest of the team on the 11th August so he pulled it forward and ran his very first 5K at his local parkrun in Lowestoft. Well done Andy!
